Walk and Talk Psychotherapy

Walk and talk therapy, also known as walking therapy or outdoor therapy, is a form of psychotherapy where sessions take place outdoors. At this time, sessions occur in Sebastopol, along a walking trail. This approach integrates physical activity and nature into the therapeutic process. Sessions tend to be more somatic in nature, allowing movement to help clients work through psychological distress.

* I do not refer to this as exercise. The purpose is movement, clients set the pace of the walk and the goal is to move the body, thus encouraging psychological movement.

The Benefits:

  • Physical Movement: Walking is a mild form of exercise that can contribute to improved mood and reduced stress levels. Physical movement can also encourage psychological movement, which may accelerate healing. Clients have reported feeling more energized and focused after a walk and talk session. Also, the endorphins that movement produces have a known positive impact on mental health.

  • Natural Environment: Being outdoors in a natural environment can have positive effects on mental well-being. Exposure to nature has been associated with reduced stress, increased relaxation, and improved overall mood.

  • Informality: Some people find an informal setting less intimidating than a traditional office environment. This can lead to a more open and natural flow of conversation. Walk and talk therapy is a great option for those who tend to be more fidgety or who have excess energy during sessions.

  • Stimulating Creativity: The outdoor environment can stimulate creativity and problem-solving. Clients may find that they are more open to new perspectives and insights while engaging in movement.

Things to Consider:

  • Confidentiality: There is less control over the privacy / confidentiality of our session. There’s always the possibility of being overheard, seeing someone you may know, or I may be recognized as a local mental health professional. Please consider this when deciding whether or not walking and talking is a good fit for you.

  • Risks: When we leave the controlled office environment, you are exposed to more risks that we cannot account for. Including tripping on the trail, interactions with others, and so on. Think about the natural risks you take when walking outdoors.

Sessions are 50 minutes in length, with the option to return to the office if you feel ready earlier. If you do opt for walk and talk therapy, please be sure to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes.
